why would you consider bariatric surgery?

Gastric banding is the process of placing an adjustable band around the top of the stomach to reduce the amount of food that can pass into the stomach at any given time.  The most popular form of Gastric Banding in the United States is the LAP-BAND System which is manufactured by Allergan.  Since approved by the FDA in 2001, more than 150,000 people have undergone the procedure and have seen miraculous results.
The LAP-BAND System is the least invasive and most widely used adjustable surgical treatment for morbid obesity in the United States. The LAP-BAND System reduces the size of the stomach pouch and limits the amount of food that can be eaten. Patients report the sensation of fullness earlier, and are more content with smaller amounts of food.  The band is placed in the area of the hunger sensation, and the “roaring hunger” feeling goes away!

The LAP-BAND Procedure

newThe procedure itself is considered safer and less invasive than other bariatric procedures. As compared to the gastric bypass, there is no cutting, stapling or rerouting of the stomach or intestines.  Performed laparoscopically, there are no large incisions and minimal discomfort to the patient.  Most patients can go home the same day of the procedures.  And, patients can typically return to their normal activities within a week of the procedure.
Within eight weeks of your procedure, your LAP-BAND is adjusted to control the rate of weight loss based on your individual needs.  At our office, your band can be inflated or deflated by adding or removing fluid (saline).  Your periodic adjustments to the band allow the rate of weight loss to be controlled as your lifestyle and health improve.

Because there are no permanent changes made to your body during your LAP-BAND insertion, if necessary, the entire procedure can be reversed by removing the LAP-BAND system.
