After going through several years of severe leg pain and my knees progressively deteriorating, I finally decided something had to be done. My quality of life had definitely gone down hill, and at the age of 60 I certainly was not going to give up. I had considered going to Raleigh or Wilmington for surgery, but the thoughts of traveling back and forth for follow up care did not appeal to me. A friend referred me to Dr. Bates, which was a true blessing. I soon found that Dr. Bates was very professional, knowledgeable, thoughtful, and very kind. He took time to educate me on all the latest advances in knee replacements and recommended the one best suited for my life-style.
On August 28, 2007 I had bilateral knee replacement. My experience with the surgery, Carteret General Hospital, and physical therapy was all positive.
Everyone was so caring. Even though it took a while to recover, it was all worth it. I am now pain free and walking 2 to 3 miles a day for exercise.
My favorite is walking on the beach!
I am so grateful for Dr. Bates, and I highly recommend him for those who are considering orthopedic surgery!

Dr. Coles has been my orthopedic physician for 10 or more years. As a very active person, I have seen him as a patient on several occasions for knee, back, shoulder and achilles tendon injuries. He has always been very responsive, thorough and thoughtful. I have referred many people to him in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Not only is he a great doctor, he is a very fine person as well.

I wanted to thank both of you (Dr. Guirgues and Dr. Coles) as well as your assistants for the wonderful care I received while being your patient. I can honestly say that I have never had the pleasure of being under the care of a facility better equipt or personable and I just wanted to say thanks!
