Ashraf F. Guirgues
MD, FAAOS

Dr. Guirgues received his Bachelor of Science degree, Magna
Cum Laude, from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical
degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
He completed a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at Wayne
State University in Detroit, Michigan and a fellowship in spine surgery
with Dr. Bruce Darden at the Charlotte Spine Center in North Carolina.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons
and a member of the North American Spine Society. He is a board
certified orthopedic surgeon.
His professional interests are in surgical treatment of spinal
disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. He particularly
enjoys minimally invasive spinal surgery such as microdiscectomy
and minimally invasive lumbar fusion. He performs spine surgery
at Carteret General Hospital and The Surgical Center of Morehead
City. Dr. Guirgues is an integral part of the Carolinas Center for
Joint and Spine at Carteret General Hospital. He is the director
of the Carolinas Center for Spine Surgery which includes a spine
surgeon, nurse practitioner, nurses and physical therapists
working as a cohesive team.
He previously practiced in New Hampshire before joining
Carteret Surgical Associates, now Carolinas Center for Surgery,
in 2006. He has completed additional training and is qualified to
perform artificial disc replacement in the neck and lower back.
He enjoys the wonderful climate of the Crystal Coast of North
Carolina. He lives in Morehead City with his wife and three sons.
John M. Marshall
MD, FAAPMR, FAADEP
Dr. Marshall was raised in Louisville, KY and attended Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA where he graduated Summa
Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science and was named to the 1983 NAIA Academic All-American Basketball Team. He returned
to Louisville to attend medical school at University of Louisville, graduating with honors in Neurology and Community
Health. Dr. Marshall undertook his internship at University of Louisville, which was followed by his residency at
University of Missouri-Columbia where he was Chief Resident. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation, the International Spine Intervention Society, the American Association of
Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and the American Academy of Rehabilitative Evaluating Physicians.
For the past 20 years, Dr. Marshall has had his own physiatry practice in the Tri-Cities region of Tennessee,
providing non-surgical orthopedic care of injuries and disorders of muscles, nerves and joints, including
the spine. Dr. Marshall is skilled in electrodiagnostic studies such as EMG and Nerve Conduction Velocity,
and in both conservative and interventional spine care, including nerve blocks and other injections. Dr.
Marshall has now joined Carolinas Center for Surgery, bringing his expertise in Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation to the Crystal Coast. He has a wonderful wife, who is an occupational therapist, and
three children.
Cecilia Ohman
MSN, ACNP-BC, RNFA

Cecilia Ohman is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse First Assistant specializing in Orthopedics-Spine Surgery. She is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She began a nursing career in 1990, graduating with a Bachelor's degree from Worcester State College.
Although she and her husband were born and raised in Worcester, they relocated to Washington state in 1992 where they lived for 13 years. Cecilia practiced nursing in a variety of settings in the hospital including Emergency, Intensive Care and the cardiac anesthesia team. In 2004 Cecilia and her family moved to Birmingham Alabama so that she could pursue graduate studies in Nursing Education and Advanced Practice. While in Birmingham she earned a Masters degree from Samford University in Nursing Education, taught baccalaureate and licensed practical nursing students and built upon her career in acute care nursing to become a nurse practitioner. During Nurse Practitioner studies at the University of Alabama, Birmingham she focused her residency in Orthopedics and Spine surgery.
Cecilia is delighted to be a part of the Carolinas Center for Surgery team working as assistant to Dr. Ashraf Guirgues. Cecilia has been married to her husband Doug for 25 years, they have two children. They enjoy the outdoors, athletics and time together with family.
